A key element of Hvar’s attraction is its natural beauty, and the Hvar Island Discovery tour combines these historic man-made settlements with some of the most unspoiled natural beauty in Europe, while also sampling the fruits of that natural goodness. Hvar is known as the lavender island, and the tour starts with a journey through the famous lavender fields of Hvar and the history of this aromatic plant. The scenery is breathtaking and punctuated by visits to the towns above, with cultural interest limited to the famous Hektorovic Tvrdalj fortress, complete with stunning fishpond and stone inscriptions, and to the UNESCO field, for this is a tour to also celebrate Hvar’s nature.
Dating back to the arrival of the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC, ancient Stari Grad celebrated 2400 years in 2016 and is claimed as the oldest town in all Croatia. Walk its superbly preserved pedestrian stone streets to breathe in the history of the Greeks, the Romans and centuries of subsequent visitors – some welcome, some not.
Formerly the island’s capital called Faros, the town also boasts its own UNESCO World Heritage site, the Stari Grad plain, an agricultural colony founded by the Greeks and the largest cultivated field on the Mediterranean. Heritage, tradition and history – Stari Grad oozes them all, but with a relaxed atmosphere which is a pleasant contrast to the busyness of Hvar Town.
Hvar’s smallest town – and some say it’s prettiest – Vrboska is home to the main marina on the island but is more famous for its nickname, Little Venice, after the short but picturesque canal with delightful stone bridges, as well as the unique fortress church which dominates its well-preserved old town. A timeless small fishing community with some several churches hosting some of the largest art collections on the Adriatic coast, Vrboska is an essential escape from the crowds.
Head into the hills to the oldest village on Hvar, dating back 2000 years, and having wandered through the sublime old streets and enjoyed a glass of wine or rakija in one of its cellars, descend to the coastal town of Jelsa, once known as ‘Pitve Harbour’, as it was built for that purpose 1300 years later. Famous for its quaint main square, one of THE places to enjoy a quiet cappuccino, stroll through its ancient streets and enjoy its cute harbour and palm-tree views to majestic Biokovo on the mainland.
After all that adventure, get ready to enjoy a home-cooked meal by members of the Lacman family. In addition to traditional delicacies of wonderful cheeses, cured meats, homemade jams and more, what follows is pure inspiration–what’s fresh and delicious from the sea as well as the garden and the land. So be prepared to be stuffed. And to make sure you digest it well, Lacman wine of course!
Using traditional grape varieties like bogdanusa and kuc, all Lacman wines are produced based on ecologically sustainable principles and knowing the exact origin of everything that goes into every bottle.
With an annual production of less than 2500 bottles and not sold in any store, whether you like a refreshing Rose or a full-bodied red, you will love the experience of drinking wine made with natural yeast, using the least amount of additives, unusual fermentation processes and unique storage techniques.
Sitting in a boutique hilltop winery surrounded by the family whose name is on the bottle—what a perfect way to end a perfect tour!

Above and beyond the normal tour
“We booked with this company 3 times and each one was better and better. Ivana was super helpful and accommodating… Our guide Leo was outstanding and incredibly knowledgeable about wine and the history of the island. He went above and beyond the normal tour and showed us significant historical sights, stopping for us to take photos whenever we wanted … each vineyard has a fascinating story behind it … stunning hill-top views of other islands … These tours were above and beyond what I would have expected.”

Great and informative tour!
‘’ We really loved Violet – she was friendly and you could tell she was passionate and knowledgeable …The drive was beautiful – high up in the rocky mountains of Hvar, away from the hustle … We stopped on the way at a scenic overlook and it was beautiful. We visited one of the top three wineries in Hvar and the tasting was done in a cave. Pretty cool … We also got to try 4 different kinds of olive oils with a side of cheese and bread…. the atmosphere of the wine cellar (think romantic candle light surrounded by oak barrels) …’’
