How to get to Hvar island, Croatia

The most direct access to Hvar island is from the Croatian coastal cities of Dubrovnik and Split.

There are frequent daily flights to both cities from many EU/European hubs and each has daily, year-round ferry/catamaran/private speedboat service to Hvar island.

To Dubrovnik

By air from the US 

Direct from the US via Newark, NJ (EWR) and New York City (JFK) to Dubrovnik (airport code DBV)

United Airlines has several flights per week from EWR (Newark) and Delta from JFK.  NOTE:  Since other airlines have talked about offering service from other cities, be sure to update your search.

 

Direct from EU/European cities to Dubrovnik

From EU and other European cities, there are numerous daily flights to Dubrovnik via hubs like London, Frankfurt, Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Amsterdam, Rome, etc. In addition to national carriers, low cost airlines like EasyJet, Ryanair, etc. also fly to Dubrovnik. 

By sea from Dubrovnik to Hvar island 

Getting to the city’s ferry terminal

From the ferry terminal by ferry/catamaran to Hvar town

The state-run ferry, Jadrolinija (https://www.jadrolinija.hr/en) has daily, high-speed, passenger-only, catamaran service from Dubrovnik to Hvar Town, which stops first at Korcula.  The trip is about 3.5 hours .

Krilo (https://www.krilo.hr/en/) is a private carrier also offering high-speed catamaran, passenger-only service to Hvar town, which stops first at Miljet (Pomena) and then Korcula.  The trip is about 3.25 hours.

  • NOTE:  During the high season, the queue of cars for the Drvenik ferry TO Sucuraj as well as FROM Sucuraj to Drvenik is very long. So it’s essential to arrive at least 1:5h before departure during July/Aug.

Hvar island has an unpaved, sport airfield located about 30 min from Hvar town.

To Split

By air from the EU/Europe

Direct daily flights from EU/European cities to Split (airport code SPU)

via hubs like London, Frankfurt, Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Amsterdam, Rome, etc .In addition to national carriers, low cost airlines like EasyJet, Ryanair, etc. also fly to Split. 

By sea from Split to Hvar island  

Getting from Split Airport to the Split ferry terminal

Buses meet all incoming flights and take about 45 minutes to get to Split.

From the ferry terminal by ferry/catamaran directly to Stari Grad/Hvar town

The state-run ferry, Jadrolinija (https://www.jadrolinija.hr/en) has daily car/passenger and catamaran service to Stari Grad and passenger-only catamaran service to Hvar town. 

If you are taking a car, you need to book the car/passenger ferry to Stari Grad.

There are no car ferries that go to Hvar town. NOTE: Advance car reservations are necessary, you should be at the ferry terminal at least 1.5 hours before the ferry leaves.  The trip is 2 hours.  Local buses and taxis meet all ferries, just look to your right as you exit the ferry. . Stari Grad town is a 15 minute taxi ride from the ferry terminal. If you are driving from Stari Grad to Hvar town it will take about 45 minutes.

If you are going directly to Hvar town, you can take passenger-only high-speed catamarans to Hvar town. NOTE: In high season, advance reservations are necessary. The trip to Hvar town is 1 hour.  All catamarans dock right in town. NOTE:  Many hotels provide golf-cart/luggage service, so if your accommodation is not within walking distance, ask your hotel if they have this service.
