TOUR DESCRIPTION

Lavender fields forever walk

This half-day program for small groups starts at 09:00 or, late afternoon at 17:00. We’ll visit the lavender fields around Velo Grablje, just a 10 min drive from Hvar Old Town. After our 45 min gentle walk we’ll reach the Velo Grablje lavender distillery where we will take a brief tour to see how lavender is made into aromatics. Then we will stroll to a central part of the village visiting the St.Kuzma and Damian church where you will enjoy local traditional a cappella singing, Then it’s time for either a delicious brunch or supper prepared using local delicacies served on the central square of the Velo Grablje, or if bad weather at the house of your host.

Did you know that a small village on Hvar which until recently had a population of just five people was once the centre of lavender production for all Dalmatia? Or that just 50 years ago, this fragrant island accounted for 8% of the world’s lavender production?

Sadly economic hardship and devastating forest fires have decimated that lavender industry, but Hvar’s lavender story is a fascinating one, and one which is undergoing a revival with the rebirth of that village, Velo Grablje. Thanks to the work of some enthusiastic locals with links to the village, the village is thriving thanks to its lavender heritage, and its population has increased to 14, there is a restaurant, winter pub and its most famous attraction, the annual Lavender Festival at the end of June.

Above and beyond the normal tour

“We booked with this company 3 times and each one was better and better. Ivana was super helpful and accommodating… Our guide Leo was outstanding and incredibly knowledgeable about wine and the history of the island. He went above and beyond the normal tour and showed us significant historical sights, stopping for us to take photos whenever we wanted … each vineyard has a fascinating story behind it … stunning hill-top views of other islands … These tours were above and beyond what I would have expected.”

Great and informative tour!

‘’ We really loved Violet – she was friendly and you could tell she was passionate and knowledgeable …The drive was beautiful – high up in the rocky mountains of Hvar, away from the hustle … We stopped on the way at a scenic overlook and it was beautiful. We visited one of the top three wineries in Hvar and the tasting was done in a cave. Pretty cool … We also got to try 4 different kinds of olive oils with a side of cheese and bread…. the atmosphere of the wine cellar (think romantic candle light surrounded by oak barrels) …’’
