Groves, gardens, vineyards, kitchens
The insider’s tour to culinary Hvar
– complete with a rustic field lunch at the Lacman Family Winery
Spend a glorious afternoon visiting our friends and family all over the island to experience the essence of authentic Hvar island gastronomy.
The concept of this tour is to showcase the inspired tastes and flavours of what makes island cuisine so fabulous. Not just to nibble and enjoy, but to welcome you into the kitchens, homes, groves, gardens and vineyards to meet and talk with the local “wizards” who are responsible for their creations.
We will visit some of these talented locals in their family homes and meet with others at their small production facilities to see, taste and enjoy what it takes to create a perfect honey, olive oil, wine and fascinating sweet delicacies that have been made for hundreds of years.
Our culinary journey through beautiful Hvar island begins with a stop at one of the island’s most scenic olive groves, just 3km from Hvar Town.
Here we will briefly introduce you to the oldest cultivated fruit on the planet—the ancient “Mother” of Mediterranean gastronomy—the olive.
Later at the Lacman Family Winery, the olive oil pressed from the trees in these ancient groves will be presented, tasted and paired with local traditional delicacies and natural wine.
After our olive grove visit, we will go to the village of Brusje to meet the Hure family, the island’s foremost beekeepers. Here we will learn about how honey is made on Hvar and the extraordinary role bees play in the life of our planet.
Next, in the hilltop hamlet of Selca, we will visit the Lacman Family Winery where you will learn about how natural wines are being produced and enjoy a glass or three with a rustic field lunch served up family style. A bountiful table full of traditional island specialties like aged smoked ham; home-made salami; gorgeous, aged sheep cheese from the island of Pag as well as the local “catch of the day“, tapas, crusty loaves of bread and seasonal inspirations prepared by members of the Lacman family and their friends.
Our last stop is the tiny village of Vrisnik. Here we will visit Teta Anita (Auntie Anita) in her home where she will treat us with the traditional sweets of Hvar. The island’s most celebrated sweet is starogrojski paprenjok – made out of flower, olive oil, saffron and honey.
Here, in the garden shade of her olive trees and vines, we will not only enjoy her paprenjok, with a glass of her delicious prosek – sweet dessert wine, but other sweets as well.
Sitting together, Teta Anita will gladly share her knowledge about living the island life and baking Hvar sweets. Born and raised in Stari Grad, Teta Anita has continued the tradition of making paprenjok since she was taught at her mother’s knee, and her mom before going back to before the Renaissance. A lovely way to end your extraordinary day discovering the culinary delights of Hvar!
We will meet you at the agreed place: your accommodation front office desk; your yacht; our office on the main Hvar Town square or elsewhere.
Our first stop will be an olive grove 3km from Hvar town where you will learn about olives and olive culture.
Then next stop is at the village of Brusje, just 2km from the Olive grove, to the honey farm of the Hure family, where we will be welcomed with sweets and then spend time learning about how honey is made and the extraordinary role bees play in the life of our planet.
Just 6km away from Bruje is the Lacman Family Winery, specialised and dedicated to natural wine production. Here we will serve and pair the wines with local traditional delicacies and the olive oil from the farm we visited.
Our final stop is to visit with Teta Anita at her home in Vrisnik to enjoy her classic starogrojski paprenjok and other sweets that she makes in her “kitchen laboratory”.
We will pick you up at your hotel, villa, private accommodation, where your boat is moored or meet you at one of our four tour booths in Hvar Town. We will agree on this when the tour is booked.
Lunchtime 12 noon – 2 PM and evening 6 – 8 PM. This tours can also be arranged at a time that is convenient for you, so please ask us what your unique requirements are and we will be happy to get back to you with the particulars and our price.
