TOUR DESCRIPTION

Groves, gardens, vineyards, kitchens

We will visit some of these talented locals in their family homes and meet with others at their small production facilities to see, taste and enjoy what it takes to create a perfect honey, olive oil, wine and fascinating sweet delicacies that have been made for hundreds of years.

Our culinary journey through beautiful Hvar island begins with a stop at one of the island’s most scenic olive groves, just 3km from Hvar Town.

Here we will briefly introduce you to the oldest cultivated fruit on the planet—the ancient “Mother” of Mediterranean gastronomy—the olive.

Later at the Lacman Family Winery, the olive oil pressed from the trees in these ancient groves will be presented, tasted and paired with local traditional delicacies and natural wine.

After our olive grove visit, we will go to the village of Brusje to meet the Hure family, the island’s foremost beekeepers.  Here we will learn about how honey is made on Hvar and the extraordinary role bees play in the life of our planet.

Next, in the hilltop hamlet of Selca, we will visit the Lacman Family Winery where you will learn about how natural wines are being produced, and enjoy a glass or three with a rustic field lunch served up family style. A bountiful table full of traditional island specialties like aged home-made salami; gorgeous, aged sheep cow or Island Hvar young goat cheese, tapas, crusty loaves of bread and fresh seasonal vegetables inspirations picked from the winery garden.

Our last stop is the tiny village of Vrisnik.  Here we will visit Teta Anita (Auntie Anita) in her home where she will treat us with the traditional sweets of Hvar.   The island’s most celebrated sweet is starogrojski paprenjok –  made out of flower, olive oil, saffron and honey.

Here, in the garden shade of her olive trees and vines, we will not only enjoy her paprenjok, with a glass of her delicious prosek – sweet dessert wine, but other sweets as well.

Sitting together, Teta Anita will gladly share her knowledge about living the island life and baking Hvar sweets.  Born and raised in Stari Grad, Teta Anita has continued the tradition of making paprenjok since she was taught at her mother’s knee, and her mom before going back to before the Renaissance.  A lovely way to end your extraordinary day discovering the culinary delights of Hvar!

Above and beyond the normal tour

“We booked with this company 3 times and each one was better and better. Ivana was super helpful and accommodating… Our guide Leo was outstanding and incredibly knowledgeable about wine and the history of the island. He went above and beyond the normal tour and showed us significant historical sights, stopping for us to take photos whenever we wanted … each vineyard has a fascinating story behind it … stunning hill-top views of other islands … These tours were above and beyond what I would have expected.”

Great and informative tour!

‘’ We really loved Violet – she was friendly and you could tell she was passionate and knowledgeable …The drive was beautiful – high up in the rocky mountains of Hvar, away from the hustle … We stopped on the way at a scenic overlook and it was beautiful. We visited one of the top three wineries in Hvar and the tasting was done in a cave. Pretty cool … We also got to try 4 different kinds of olive oils with a side of cheese and bread…. the atmosphere of the wine cellar (think romantic candle light surrounded by oak barrels) …’’
