Hvar’s beaches are gorgeous and should be a key component of your holiday, but inland Hvar is an altogether more fascinating story, and one which most tourists sadly never experience. Join us on a Hvar culinary picnic to discover the Hvar less travelled and just why the Hvar Mediterranean Diet recently became UNESCO intangible heritage.
Your day takes you to a number of fascinating spots where you will learn about the natural production on Hvar, famous for its lavender, olives and did you know its rosemary honey was recently placed in the top 4 in the world?
First we take you to a typical rural village of Hvar, to a visit of the one of the last Hvar true agronomists, whose fruit and vegetables will take your breath away – and that is before you have tried the famous goat cheese.
Olives are an integral part of Dalmatian life and we will take you to the idyllic olive grove of one of Hvar’s most reputed olive growers, Borivoj Bojanic, near the village of Vrisnik. Fun fact – did you know that olive from Vrisnik is the world’s most expensive? A few years ago, Harrod’s of London marketed (and sold!) 444 bottles of 0.2 liter Vrisnik olive oil, complete with edible gold leaf, for a cool £750 a bottle!
Borivoj’s oil is not that expensive, but the quality is just as good, with its distinctive spicy flavor, which along with the locally sourced herbs and spices will contribute to a memorable meal overlooking UNESCO World Heritage Site the Stari Grad Plain, where olive trees and vines were planted by the Ancient Greeks some 2400 years ago, and little has changed since.
Our culinary picnic is great for families, as well as romantics, and you would not be the first to pop the question here to your loved one. Just tell us your requirements in advance, and we can cater to any special need.
This half day tour takes you to picturesque central Hvar Island overlooking one of Croatia’s 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
On the way to your olive grove picnic, you will drive along the old road from Hvar Town, often called the road of lavender, which is stretching through the villages of Brusje, Velo Grablje and Selca, for here you can find what remains of Hvar’s proud lavender tradition – Velo Grablje was once the capital of lavender production for all Dalamtia. On this road you will be able to learn about the harsh lifestyle and working conditions that determined today’s landscape of inland Hvar. You will hear stories of its famous lavender history, legends and details on what is left out of this great history, including a visit to the famous lavender village of Velo Grablje, which is enjoying a fantastic revival in recent years.
Next stop is Dol, a village on the edge of the UNESCO zone, to learn more (and sample!) some of the finest goat cheese in Dalmatia, from a small herd of goats and a distinguished producer. You will try the goat cheese in various samples and styles including crepes (pancake) from the young goat cheese, and goat cheese marinated in aromatic herbs and macerated olive oil.
After wards we continue to a secretly hidden olive grove near the village of Vrisnik where you will enjoy in the tasteful picnic lunch. Your meal will be prepared in a traditional island way, and served by the island’s best olive oil producer Mr. Borivoj Bojanic and his wife Zeljka.
We will pick you up at your hotel, villa, private accommodation, where your boat is moored or meet you at one of our four tour booths in Hvar Town. We will agree on this when the tour is booked.
Lunch time 12 noon – 2 PM and evening 6 – 8 PM. This tours can also be arranged at a time that is convenient for you, so please ask us what your unique requirements are and we will be happy to get back to you with the particulars and our price.
We will end this tour where you wish – at the marina, your hotel, villa or private accommodation. Just let us know.
