Dubrovnik is the world-renowned ‘Jewel of the Adriatic’. Its thick stone walls and towers are drenched with centuries of history, fables of freedom, and treatises on independence. It is a treasure trove of stunning architecture and art that has been jealously guarded and preserved. Imagine yourself in the 15thc as you stroll through her narrow alleyways, glide across her cobbled squares, and peruse her old churches, libraries and monasteries; let the muse of Dubrovnik charm your mind and inspire your spirit. On our beautiful 3.5 hour cruise down to Dubrovnik we can stop for a swim around Mljet or Korcula Island, or some short sightseeing if you wish. And each of these islands has some great local bistros where the fish is especially delicious and of course the wine is out of this world.

Dubrovnik city tour with the guide
Dubrovnik has captivated kings and commoners alike for centuries. It’s the quintessential walled city of legend - proud, grand, and ancient. With its signature red and tan clay rooftops and massive stone ramparts framed by the dazzling blue Adriatic, our tour of Dubrovnik is the ultimate treat for visitors who want to see beyond the obvious and explore the architecture and history of this fabled city. Join us as we discover Dubrovnik and its golden age. Our discovery begins as we enter the Old Town through the Pile Gate. Along the way we will visit St. Savior’s, a grandiose Franciscan and Dominican church. Next we will admire one of the crown jewels of Dubrovnik, Knezev Dvor, the Rector’s Palace. If you are fortunate enough to be in Dubrovnik during its celebrated Music Festival, standing in the palace’s central courtyard listening to a stunning classical concert under the stars is an unforgettable Dubrovnik experience! One of the real highlights of our walking tour is the famous Pharmacy at the Franciscan Monastery, which was built in 1317. Inside is a fascinating collection of decorated jars filled with ancient remedies; unique measurement devices, together with alembics and mortars. The Monastery, which also houses a museum with an excellent art collection, took a century to build and was almost completely destroyed in the tragic earthquake of 1667.

Judaic Tour of Dubrovnik
Despite the small size of Dubrovnik's Old Town, the synagogue here has global significance. It's the oldest Sephardic synagogue in the world, established in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1652. After Queen Isabella of Spain expelled Jews the same year she sent columbus to discover the New World, many Sephardim settled here and were joined by others from the expulsions in Southern Italy in 1514 - 15. The new immigrants quickly established themselves as merchants dealing in fabrics, silk, wool, leather, and spices. By 1614 the Jews of Dubrovnik were so much a part of the fabric of Dubrovnik that the Senate gave concessions to encourage them to live here permanently. Less than a decade later, however, the increased pressure from the catholic church and the changing sentiments of the local population had reduced the Jewish population to just four families. Today there are only a handful of Jews still living here and the synagogue is mostly a museum--but from time to time prayer services are still held. We will start our special tour in front of Onofrio's fountain and continue along the main street Stradun, towards Zudioska (Jewish) Street where the Jewish community once lived. Then we will visit the synagogue and its remarkably well - preserved and historically significant interior. In ghetto times, the alley was closed at the top. At the lower end, near the sign Zudioska ulica (Jews' street), ghetto traffic was controlled by a gate, which no longer exists. The synagogue was established in 1408 in a narrow three-storied stone building dating from the fourteenth century and looks today very much like it did 600 years ago. Access to the women's gallery behind the high wooden grilles is through the adjacent house, thehome of Emilio Tolentino..

Dubrovnik’s old town, defined by its encompassing city walls, is rarely seen by tourists in the very early morning. Yet, only by walking the walls, we can watch the old town begin to awaken. Finishing the walk on the sea side, we make a stop at the Maritime museum located in St John’s castle. Strolling through the open air market, we see the timeless tradition of our local farmers displaying, selling and trading their homemade honey, olive oil, farm fresh goat cheese and fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. This is the way life has been for centuries and we get to feel the pulse of the town for this one day. Approaching a romantic staircase modeled on the Spanish Steps in Rome, we arrive at St Ignatius church, one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Dubrovnik. Both the stairway and square in front of the church are used as venues during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. You are very fortunate if you come at the right time and can catch a show. Along the sea side of Dubrovnik is an area seldom seen by guests and considered to be the oldest part of the old town. This section was still an island prior to the Stradun being filled in thus connecting the island of Laus with the mainland part which was then called Ragusa. The next stop is one of Dubrovnik’s secrets. We will pause at the “cold Drinks” sign at Buza before entering a small opening in the walls. Through this passageway is a small cliffside café overlooking the Adriatic Sea, with an unsurpassed view of the island Lokrum. Our final visit is to the Rupe (Hole) Granary, built by the Dubrovnik government to store the municipal grain reserves. The history of the building is illustrated by photographs and also has a permanent exhibition of tradition folk costumes and textiles describing the cultural heritage of Dubrovnik region. We end our tour with a coffee and pastry at one of the Stradun cafes, a place to sit and reflect, see and be seen.
