Cliffs and hidden lagoons: Hvar’s magical southern shore

While the majority head to the Pakleni Islands, take a private speedboat tour of one of Hvar’s surprisingly lesser discovered treasures – its southern shore. And what treasures there are!

With plenty of hidden bays to discover, south shore highlights include (Crvene Stijene), accessible only by boat, the fabulous Zarace lagoon, Dubovica bay, with its iconic stone house in the water, the almost abandoned village of Gromin Dolac, the delightful island of Scedro which is home to some of the world’s best honey, and a wine tasting in one of Croatia’s most famous wineries. With plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling and dining at our highly recommended and lesser known eateries, the itinerary for this tour is set by you to reflect the way you would like to spend your magical day. We provide only the recommendations, information and personal service and transport to help you enjoy this fabulous and picturesque slice of Hvar heaven.

Our safari is the kind of island escape everybody dreams about – an intimate look at pristine archipelago nature–those hidden coves and exquisitely shaped, natural rock formations that can only be experienced from being on the sea!  Enjoy delicious swimming at secluded small beaches framed by the lush south hill vineyards of Plavac Mali (you can go au naturel if you wish!). Discover a private sea cave and explore!  As all islanders know, the beaches on Hvar’s south side are far less crowded and the best are only reachable by boat. Some of them are even not beaches, but wait until you experience the thrill of swimming under a 200 metre giant cliff or jumping into the sea from one of its ledges!

Tour descriptions:

This is a private tour with the agenda set by you. Inform the skipper of your preferences, and he will be delighted to accommodate. The choice of beaches, for example, is breathtaking. If you are looking for company and facilities such as bars and restaurants, resorts such as Milna, Dubovica, Ivan Dolac and Zavala are all on the route, as well as spectacular swimming settings such as Malo Zarace and below those Red Tocks, but there are numerous tiny bays where you will find total privacy, some with space for just four people. And if you are looking to conceive, do check out Lucisce, which is reputed to have procreation powers.

There are numerous dining options, according to your wishes, with our top tip being the small Lovrincevic family restaurant in stunning Dubovica, where your college-educated chef decided on a simple life by the sea, bought a fishing boat, and now serves simple fresh dishes from the fruits of his catch, with prawns and squid not to be missed.

Another fantastic option is the locally prepared catch of the day from the Kordic family on Scedro, a barely inhabited island to the south of Hvar, whose restaurant still used the water tank from the 16th century monastery from where legend says the last remaining monk fled his solitude by dragging the heavy monastery door to the sea, using it as a raft to escape to Hvar.

And certainly not to be missed is you are a wine lover is a visit to Zlatan Otok, one of the most famous wineries in all Croatia, and one with arguably the best location, overlooking the sea to the south and the impossibly steep Plavac Mali vineyards to the north. Enjoy tasting Decanter’s choice of best white white in the region, the Zlatan Posip, as well as the most famous of them all, the Zlatan Otok Grand Cru.
