Hvar Archeological Experience

This wonderful tour is dedicated to the beloved Hvar archaeologist and academic Dr. Grga Novak – knighted by the Queen Elizabeth I, he also received many awards and important decorations from France, Italy and Poland. In addition to his honorary doctorates from many European universities, Dr. Novak was a member of the Royal Archaeological Society of London, a member of the famed Roman Accademia dei Lincei and a member of the Austrian Academy. And Hvar's illustrious archeologist also happens to be your guide’s uncle and discovered all of the fabulous treasures described below.

visiting Grapceva Cave

Forever at the boundary of world cultures, the island of Hvar tells a historical saga of both man and western civilization. We will visit Grapceva Cave, where Neolithic remains take you back to sometime around 8000 B.C. - a time when civilization was a mere twinkle in man’s eye. The ceramics found at this site are colourfully adorned with exquisite spiral ornamentation, and are in fact so unique to Neolithic art that scientists have given them the special designation ‘Hvar Culture’.

and on to Stari Grad and the Arsenal

Next it’s on to Stari Grad, the oldest city in Croatia, where in 384 B.C. the Greeks began their agrarian reform . Currently on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage List, the fertile plain that lies to the east of Stari Grad is the site of oldest known agricultural land division on the planet - its cadastral plots have been preserved for almost 2,000 years. Other historical wonders include the oldest known public theatre in Europe located in the city of Hvar, the highly developed architecture of rustic Roman villas as well as other exquisite structures touched by the influence of the Venetian, Napoleonic, and Austro-Hungarian empires. You’ll also visit sites that tell heroic tales of military encounters with the Turks, Russians and English.

Hvar Renaissance Experience
including Brusje, Hvar Town

The Renaissance stylistically marked the beginning of Hvar's cultural blossoming—a flourishing period of development that would consequently last until the18th century. Your Renaissance experience will begin at the Novaks' family konoba and library in Brusje. Here you'll get an ample dose of information and hospitality as you watch a short film and sample some homemade appetizers and refreshments. You will also visit the church in Brusje to view some fine art from the period before heading off to Hvar. Today, the city of Hvar abounds with architecture and artefacts that give unique insight into the historical events and way of life from the Renaissance period. From exquisite palaces and Europe's oldest public theatre to epic poetry and the largest known painting of the last supper, Hvar truly embodied the spirit of the times. The sites you'll visit include the Fortress, the poet Luci's Mansion, the museum and cloister of the monastery of St. Marko, the Arsenal and Renaissance theatre as well as the gardens and collections at the Franciscan Monastery.

Hvar Rural Experience
Vrboska, Malo Grablje and Humac

This tour will deepen your experience of Hvar through personal interaction with local people, places and culture. The tour first focuses on the splendid town of Vrboska, Hvar's ‘Little Venice’, which was once the centre of Hvar’s fishing commerce. Here you’ll get a first-hand look at the history, architecture and art that form this town’s distinct cultural heritage, not to mention the quaint bridges and canals that give it its charming Venetian vibe. You'll also visit the vineyards of Hvar’s southern slopes where you’ll meet local wine makers and sample some of their finest. Abandoned villages make up with spirit and intrigue what they lack in population, and the villages of Malo Grablje and Humac are no exception. Wander through their cobbled alleys, peruse their old stone dwellings, and paint a picture with your mind as you listen to the stories of these once thriving communities.
